IRVINE, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2023) — The University of California, Irvine School of Law (UCI Law) is pleased to announce that UCI Clinical Professor of Law Katie Tinto has been named a 2023 Pro Bono Honoree by Public Counsel, the nation’s largest provider of pro bono services. Tinto, who directs UCI Law’s Criminal Justice Clinic, was honored by the organization’s Immigrants’ Rights Project for her advocacy efforts as a volunteer on the organization’s Anti-Detention Team. Tinto and fellow honorees were recognized for their commitment to justice and service and for their dedication to Public Counsel clients as pro bono partners.
“By generously donating their time, skills and resources, our pro bono partners play a crucial role in shaping a brighter future for Los Angeles and our nation,” the organization said in its announcement. “Pro bono service not only addresses the immediate legal needs of those we serve but also contributes to the healing and strengthening of our communities, fostering justice and empowerment that resonates far and wide.”
Public Counsel’s Immigrants’ Rights Project’s detention team provides client-centered legal advocacy in matters related to detention and deportation. The team provides legal representation, both in-house and through volunteer attorneys, to individuals incarcerated by immigration authorities at the Adelanto Detention Facility in Adelanto, Calif., as well as to deported veterans. Located in San Bernardino County, Adelanto Detention Facility is California’s largest detention center housing nearly 2,000 immigrant detainees. The project’s clients range from newly arrived asylum seekers to people who have lived nearly their entire lives in the U.S. The team also engages in advocacy efforts to ensure legal representation for immigrants in detention, and in efforts to end immigration detention.
