IRVINE, Calif. (May 9, 2024) — Jean Selep, a third-year student at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, received the Paul Miller Memorial Fund award by the Los Angeles Copyright Society (LACS) on April 16 in Los Angeles.
“Jean Selep’s work has been truly exemplary — in the classroom, as a Certified Law Student practicing in the UCI Intellectual Property, Arts, and Technology Clinic, and as a student scholar,” said Professor Jack Lerner who directs the Intellectual Property, Arts, and Technology Clinic. “We are incredibly proud of Jean and I could not think of a more fitting honor for them than this prestigious award.”
“I am grateful to be recognized for this award and thank Professors Jack Lerner and Anthony Reese for their help and mentorship,” said Selep.
Created in 2007 in honor of early LACS member Paul Miller, who was a business affairs executive and attorney at Universal Television and its predecessors for more than 50 years, the Paul Miller Memorial Fund recognizes one student from each Los Angeles area law school who demonstrates excellence in copyright and entertainment law. Recipients are invited to attend, free of charge, monthly LACS meetings.
The Los Angeles Copyright Society is a members-only organization of attorneys who practice in copyright, trademark, communications and related areas. LACS’s members include outside lawyers, lawyers at motion picture studios, media companies and other corporations and entities in the intellectual property space. The group meets monthly over dinner during the academic year to hear speakers present on a variety of intellectual property topics including, on many occasions, about a case just argued or currently pending in the California Supreme Courts or U.S. Supreme Court.
Jean Selep, a third-year law student UC Irvine School of Law, will join Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein, & Fox LLP in its Washington, D.C. office following the bar exam. They have worked on research relating to standard technical measures under Section 512 and the implications of private standard-setting organizations on copyright. Selep plans to continue their work in other fields of intellectual property.
